Aupeo is a streaming online radio station that gives the user control over what is played. Unlike listening to a regular radio station, which generally plays whatever specific genre the station is based around and nothing else, Aupeo allows users to come up with their own station theme. By either selecting a suggested popular artist or entering a favorite musician or genre, the user gains control over what is heard. Aupeo also offers mood-specific stations.

Based out of Berlin, Aupeo was created to give users better control over what they listen to. Through the Aupeo application, users can tailor stations to their mood or musical preferences rather than listen to what others have already chosen for them. Founded in 2008, Aupeo works alongside the Fraunhofer Institute. Today, Aupeo presents a new way for internet users to enjoy music in a format that caters to their genre preferences and mood.

Aupeo is not a regular radio station. Anyone can turn on the radio or internet radio and listen to a preset collection of songs and advertisements. Although these span many genres, it is difficult to find a station that is all inclusive based on the listener’s preferences. Aupeo changes that by presenting an online, streaming radio station that allows the user control over what is heard. Through Aupeo, users can create a playlist or listen by genre, artist or even their current emotional state.

Aupeo uses a vibrant green and grey color scheme that forms a delightful contrast. Visually, the website incorporates basic elements in a way that is highly appealing. The Aupeo mascot, a strange figure with a green circle and white exclamation point on his stomach, is by far an original creation that adds even more personality to the website design. The layout is clutter free and allows the user to smoothly move from one area to the next without having to stop and search for the right link or button.

The registration link for Aupeo may not be readily apparent, but it is not hard to find. A link in the top right hand corner of the website invites users to sign up. The registration page requests gender, first and last name, login name, email address, and password. Two optional fields ask for language and date of birth. A check box is automatically selected to sign the user up for the Aupeo newsletter, but this can be unchecked prior to finalizing account creation. After submitting the information, an email is sent and verification is required.

Aupeo provides users with two account options. The default account is free and allows access to basic features. Users can choose to upgrade to a premium account for just under $5 a month, or less than $50 per year. The upgrade provides better quality streaming audio (increases from the 128 Kb per second offered through the free account to 192 Kb), unlimited use on a mobile device, ad free usage and access to all Aupeo radio stations.

Anyone who loves to listen to music can enjoy Aupeo, especially those who prefer to listen online. The free and premium account option allows flexibility for the user. Those who only listen on occasion may prefer the free option while frequent listeners may prefer to pay the minimal fee for a premium account. Music lovers can create a station that fits their preferences rather than try to seek out an existing station of preset songs.
